In August, an assessment team from the National Capital Presbytery went to Puerto Rico to connect with leaders of the Synod, Presbytery and churches to listen deeply and to understand the immediate and more long-term needs of our sister churches and their communities. There are many, many rebuilding needs as well as emotional and spiritual needs that break our hearts. There is a sense that people feel forgotten and the resources that they need are not attainable to the most vulnerable. As Isaiah 61 suggests, we are being sent to partner with churches and communities in their rebuilding efforts and to bring hope and the love of Christ to those with which we serve. Together we can make a difference!
NCP Disaster Relief Network's first mission work project/partnership building trip will be from Dec. 31, 2018 - Jan. 9, 2019 and will include both home building projects as well as relational/emotional/spiritual connections and programs. The need is great.
Renew. Repair. Rebuild.
Isaiah 61 comes to life in light of Hurricane Maria to those who are left with the aftermath of devastation. It reminds us that WE are being sent to partner with those who still after a year stand in the middle of blue tarped houses, who still have great loss in their hearts, and who suffer from PTSD and trauma related health issues. Yes, the Spirit of the Lord is upon us to bring good news and to partner with those as they rebuild the old ruins, raise a new city out of the wreckage, and to take the rubble left behind and make it new.
Do you have building skills or are you a handyperson? Are you a roofer? Are you a social worker who loves connecting with people? Are you a pastor, youth director, christian educator, Elder, Deacon, church member or friend of the church? Do you love to work with kids or youth? Does your church want to support a seminarian in Puerto Rico? Would you or your church like a transforming alternative gift program for your holiday giving? Do you want to be part of a life changing intercultural experience? Do you have a passion for the Puerto Rican people? Come and join National Capital Presbytery’s Disaster Relief Network’s Adult Rebuild and Partnership trip with Presbyterian churches and their communities in Puerto Rico.
Depending on the skills and size of the group that will be going, there will be a number of rebuild projects as well as other relational kinds of interactions such as leading a day camp for kids and youth around the topic of resiliency, intercultural learning opportunities, volunteering at a community center to engage the needs of the economically challenged, using your skills of drama and music as we worship every night with the community, and organizing a Tres Reyes celebration (Epiphany) for a whole town!

How Can Churches Provide Support
In August, an assessment team from the Presbytery went to Puerto Rico to connect with leaders of the Synod, Presbytery and churches to listen deeply and to understand the immediate and more long-term needs of our sister churches and their communities. Together our Presbytery can make a difference!
Knowing that we are partners to the churches, Presbyteries and Synod of Puerto Rico, there are a number of ways churches can support this work project/partnership trip and recovery efforts. As it is important to support the local economy while we are serving in Puerto Rico, most building supplies and resource supplies will be bought near where we are serving. Both rebuilding and emotional/spiritual/relational projects are planned for this trip.
Below are the most needed donations:
Cash Donations! Please click here to donate! This is the best way to get our work projects complete. Big or small, any amount will help make a difference!
Walmart Gift Cards and Visa or Mastercard Gift Cards-
Make your Church’s Holiday Mission Drive focus be on Puerto Rico!
Tres Reyes is a HUGE celebration in the Puerto Rican culture (like our Epiphany) and it is an allday event on Sunday Jan. 6th, 2019. Preparations are extensive with dramas and singing and enacting out the presentation of gifts to the Christ Child. And yes, every child will get toys that day. We are planning to bring Tres Reyes to life as we partner with a small town up the mountains from Añasco. We need these gift cards to purchase gifts at Walmart and local dollar type stores and some minor building supplies from local hardware stores.
Home Depot Gift Cards-
The rebuilding need is great- everywhere you look, there is a roof still blue tarped and leaking. The inside of houses have been destroyed and materials from the local Home Depot will be essential for our identified work projects.
Connect and Support Presbyterian Seminarians
The Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico is a multidenominational seminary with which Presbyterians attain their M.Div. or D.Min degrees. We are creating connections with the Seminary for intercultural exchanges and scholarships for those attending. For more information, please email Carrie Yearick at "firstname.lastname@example.org"
Your contributions and continued support & prayers will help kids and youth find hope in the midst of disaster, bring encouragement & love to the most vulnerable, and return homes to habitable conditions. Your generosity will build a future of hope for the next generation!
